As I look on my own life, these stories resonate with me as I think how often I have ignored what God has wanted me to do, choosing instead my own path in life. While the Lord has never spoken to me in anything as explicit as a bush on fire, he has spoken through family, friends and the quiet voice in my own heart. Yet why was I, and do I continue to be, reluctant to be obedient to what God wants?
As Jesus made clear, God who we call ‘Our Father’ cares deeply for us and wants to provide for us if only we would trust him and say yes! ‘Do not set your heart on what you are to eat and drink; stop worrying! …. Your Father knows that you need them’. As Saint John Henry Newman said ‘God has created me to do Him some definite service’, and it is when we say yes to God that he is able to transform our own and others’ lives. After Moses’ eventual yes, God used him to bring his chosen people back into freedom. In our own life God wants to use us to bring ourselves and others to the freedom he guarantees. So the challenge for myself is to say yes to him today! I pray to be a little less like the prophets looking for an excuse to say no. Instead I should imitate Mary, who simply said yes to God from which Jesus was conceived and freedom gained for all!
